Kangsabati Reservoir Project
A purely State controlled Project named “Kangsabati Reservoir Project” was initiated in the year 1956-57 at the confluence point of river Kangsabati and Kumari at Mukutmonipur in Block: Khatra, PS: Khatra in the District of Bankura for supplying water for Irrigation for Khariff and Rabi season in the districts of Bankura, Paschim Midnapore, Jhargram and Hooghly in addition to supply of drinking water and to fulfill cattle feeding demand to the districts of Bankura, Purulia Jhargram and Paschim Midnapore with a capacity to control flood in the down valley of Reservoir particularly in the districts of Jhargram and Paschim Midnapore by storing water during peak flood. It is about 55 Km from Bankura, about 102 Km from Durgapur and about 215 Km from Kolkata by road. The length of main canals covering four districts is around 620 Km with around 3000 Km Branch Minor and Sub- minor canals scattered all over the command for smooth hassle free distribution of water to the cultivators. Irrigation Potential created to the tune of 650000 Acre (263157 Ha)
The project though originally planned for Kharif with limited Rabi irrigation in the draught prone area of southern part of West Bengal with a capacity to control flood, at present the dam is also play a vital role not only to supply water for drinking purpose to different districts but also promoting piscicultural activities with a greater extent of tourism with small scale industries and thus, the Socio-economic condition of the people of this part of the state is growing much.
